September 3, 2024 - Healing Through Heritage: A Discussion of Historical Trauma in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Communities: Listen to Tessa Palafu and Danielle L. Carreira Ching present on Historical trauma (HT) specifically within the context of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI), and its empirically deduced impacts that align with the disproportionate physical and mental health issues faced by NHPI individuals. In addition, the presenters also discuss gaps in the current research and culturally grounded treatment recommendations. A slide deck for this presentation is provided here.

June 4, 2024 - From Empathy to Exhaustion: Recognizing and Addressing Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Vicarious Trauma in Mental Health Practice: Listen to Stephanie Campbell, Ph.D., and Lydia Hogan present on the distinctions between three phenomena often experienced by behavioral health professionals: burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. In addition, the presenters also teach practitioners how to recognize and mitigate their effects, and highlight the roles of empathy and compassion in preventative strategies.

March 5, 2024- What to do for youth after a disaster? An Overview from the Grief and Psychological Trauma Treatment Literature: Listen to Anthony Papa, Ph.D., present on evidence-based decision making process in determining when to intervene for individuals who have experienced bereavement and identifying basic processes that differentiate who goes on to experience normal grief from those who have pathological responses.

October 3, 2023 - What Can Hopefulness Tell Us?: A Presentation on The 4-item Ohio Scales, Hopefulness Scale: Listen to Andrea Ng talk about her research on the Ohio Scales, Hopefulness Domain and the implications of assessing hopefulness among youth with mental illness and their caregivers in Hawai‘i.

August 1, 2023 - Treatment Focus Diffusion as an Indicator of Immediate and Long-Term Outcomes in Youth Public Mental Health Care: Listen to Kalyn Holmes, Ph.D., present on treatment focus diffusion (TFD) and its relationship with clinical and system outcomes in Hawai‘i’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division (CAMHD).

July 13th, 2021 - Hawaiʻi’s Major Child Serving State Agencies: Collaboratively Addressing the Impact of COVID-19 and Steps Moving Forward: Listen to Max Sender, Dr. Tolly Amaxopoulos, Tonia Mahi, Rachel Thorburn, and Theresa Minami present on understanding the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on current agency operations and service utilization rates, collaboratively brainstorming improvement ideas for our child-serving system to better serve the mental health needs of children and families in the state of Hawaiʻi, and identifying potential next steps to support children and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

March 2, 2021 - Disruptive Behavior Treatment Progress as a Function of Practices Derived from the Evidence Base for Disruptive Behavior and Depression: Listen to Daniel Wilkie, Ph.D.’s presentation on understanding the background of disruptive behavior problems in youth, irritability, comorbid depression, and their associated treatment practices derived from the evidence-based treatment research. Objectives include understanding the associations between disruptive behavior treatment progress and treatment practices derived from the evidence-based literature and identifying potential implications for disruptive behavior treatment effectiveness within community-based mental health care systems in Hawai’i.

October 6, 2020 - Recommendations for Increasing Rapport and “Telepresence” During Telemental Interactions with Youth and Families: Listen to Tristan Maesaka, M.A. and Austen Taylor Matro, B.A.’s presentation on various telepractice recommendations, how to incorporate these recommendations into one’s own practice, and how to feel more feel more confident in using telemental health with youth and families.

July 7, 2020 - Media and the Developing Brain and Body: Listen to Jeffrey Okamoto, M.D.’s presentation on how media use can affect the brain development, behavior, and physical health of children. How to recognize and address problematic media use in children and how to promote smart and safe media use for families.

June 2, 2020 - A Psychometric Investigation of the Ohio Scales, Short Form, Problem Severity Domain, Youth-and Caregiver-Report Versions: Listen to Tommie Laba, M.A.’s presentation on the psychometric performance of the Ohio Scales as it relates to the CAMHD client population. Identify how the study findings intersect with existing work done with youth and families in Hawai’i and identify potential implications for ongoing utilization of the Ohio Scales. Discussants include Madeleine Hiraga-Nuccio, Keli Acquaro, and Ben Ogles, PhD.

February 2020 - A History of Youth Psychosocial Treatment Through the Distillation Lens: Looking Back to Move Forward: Listen to Kelsie Okamura, PhD. and Geniel Hernandez Armstrong, PhD discuss the framework and definition of practice elements and how they relate to evidence-based treatment. Identify problem areas that may need more efficacy and effectiveness research. Compare historical practice element trends to existing CAMHD reports and metrics.

March 5, 2018 – Everybody Counts: Assessing and Serving the Needs of Gender and Sexual Minority Youth in Hawai`i: View Lance Ching, PhD and Thaddeus Pham from the Hawai`i Department of Health’s presentation of the following: current health disparities and social determinants of health among heterosexual, cisgender, sexual minority, and gender minority youth in Hawai`i, as well as ways to apply such knowledge to practice to support and improve the lives of gender and sexual minorities in Hawai`i. 

November 8, 2018 – Multisystemic Therapy (MST): Who We Are; What We Do; And, Real World Applications: Listen to Georgina Mollica LCSW., MST Systems Supervisor, PACT Hawaii discuss the following: the basics of the MST Model including the principles and process which guide our treatment; how research is reflected in family treatment; as well as common family, peer, school, individual and social support assessment and intervention strategies and how they are used in MST through real-world presentations.

July 11, 2018 – Keeping the Child’s Mind in Mind: Enhancing Mentalizing Approaches in Foster Parents Listen to Richard Delaney, Ph.D. and Tracy Lewis discuss the nature of reflective capacity and mentalization, how relational trauma impacts parental capacity in birth parents, how trauma impacts children, and discuss how to enhance a mentalizing approach in foster and birth parents.
