Stress Management: A variety of skills can help your child cope with depression, anxiety, and stress during COVID-19. For example, one keiki skill, is cognitive coping. Imagine asking your child, “What good thing has come from having to stay at home?” Such re-thinking of your situation was associated with less psychological distress and more life satisfaction among students dealing with COVID-19 school closures (Tang, Xiang, Cheung, & Xiang, 2020). Cognitive coping refers to changing or reframing an event’s meaning through discussing your child’s thoughts on those events. In Tang et al.’s (2020) work, for instance, some children noted two benefits because of COVID-19 school closures: increased time for family and/or personal activities. When children can reframe events, they tend to be less stressed and sad about those things. For more information on these and other strategies, please see the links below.

Talking With Children: Appropriate parent-child discussions on the pandemic can help reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. This keiki skill, referred to as child and youth education refers to the review of information with your child about how a problem developed, in a manner that matches their age and level of understanding. The goal of doing this technique is to empower your child with knowledge about the challenge at hand. For more information about how to speak with your children on the topic of COVID-19, please see the links below.
