Goal-Setting

Speaking with the youth regarding future plans/goals and how therapy may aid in reaching those goals. This skill involves learning to set goals that are realistic, measurable and support a positive behavioral change. Part of goal-setting may also include thinking about potential barriers and how they can be addressed.

What should my therapist be doing?

  • Discussing the benefits of setting future plans and goals with your child

  • Explaining to your child the steps to goal setting including setting realistic, measurable and positive goals

  • Problem-solving with your child things that may get in the way of reaching their goal

  • Practicing with your child how to set goals and track their progress

What should I be doing?

  • Discussing your child’s goals with them and the things that might get in the way

  • Encouraging and supporting your child to achieve their goals

  • Praising your child for reaching parts or all of their goals

How will I know if it is working?

  • Your child will feel accomplished as they progress

  • Your child will be able to show progress on their chosen goals

  • You will be able to notice the progress your child has made toward their goals
